About the initiative

Covid-19, as the disease caused by the novel coronavirus is called, has infected more than 2.7 lakh people worldwide, killing more than 11,500. In India alone, the disease has so far caused 4 deaths and infected at least 300 people across 22 states, as of 21st March 2020.

Medical experts agree that the only way to control the rapidly spreading disease is to practice social distancing and limit human-to-human interactions. In the past week, several states across India put this into action by closing down schools, colleges, malls, theatres, restaurants, shops and non-essential workplaces, recommending working from home where possible.

It’s important to remember that not all can remain in quarantine without their lives being completely upturned. The financial impact, especially on families that survive on daily income - laborers, domestic helps, taxi drivers, restaurant waiters, beauticians/hairdressers have been far reaching. On the other hand, there are many people in our society: doctors, nurses, conservancy workers (garbage/waste segregators), delivery staff, field volunteers working tirelessly to ensure our societal needs are met: often at the risk of personal safety.

But if there’s anything that the pandemic has taught us, it is that people want to help those who need it the most.

This crowdfunding initiative by Milaap is to highlight citizen initiatives carried out to mitigate the economic crisis faced by vulnerable families as well as support those who are in the frontlines with the monetary resources they deserve.

Our larger objective is to inspire each one of us to look within our circles, our neighborhoods, our workplaces and support the vulnerable in this hour of need. The only way to fight this, is together.

P.S This is NOT an initiative for individual COVID-19 related medical expenses, since it’s been taken care of by the government.

FAQs

If you are a company, apartment complex or NGO primarly engaged with workers affected by downturn or working in the frontlines,  we’ll assist you with your fundraising initiative (public or private) based on your needs.  Reach out to us via ajith@milaap.org
We'll rely on you to identify those who need the assistance. Funds raised can be paid out directly from Milaap to respective bank accounts of beneficiaries.
Milaap charges NO platform fees for all campaigns associated with Covid-19 initiatives. There's a payment gateway fees that varies between 0-2% for INR donations and 3% for foreign donations, depending on the type of payment (netbanking, card, cheque) chosen by the donor.
For INR transfers, it’s transferred on the same day (or next working day for amounts greater than 2 Lac rupees) from date of approval. For USD transfer to an individual/NGO's FCRA bank a/c, it takes 3-5 working days.
If you are fundraising on Milaap, visit your campaign page and Log in to your Milaap account using the email id (or Facebook login)  used to create the campaign.
  • Click on “Withdraw Funds” on top right corner
  • Submit the KYC document (Any Govt ID proof) and bank account details of the recipient.
  • Post an update or provide any supporting documents available in the documents section.
All transfer requests placed will be reviewed by the very next day (Mon - Sat). Requests set up on Saturday will be reviewed by Monday.
While Milaap encourages all of us to raise money for the causes we care about,  we’ll assess each and every campaign during our review process to check if it qualifies to be highlighted in this initiative. Some of the criteria includes:

Fundraisers for people/segments affected by the economic downturn due to Covid19 (explained in the story section of the page)  Some examples, but not limited to
  • a) Domestic h and contract staff
  • Ride Hailing services ie Taxi, Auto-rickshaw drivers.
  • Beauticians, hairdressers, workers in spasd
  • Waiters
  • Tourism and Aviation staff
People/Segments that continue to work with physical mobility risking their personal safety. Some examples but not limited to
  • Delivery personnel
  • Housekeeping staff, Conservancy workers
  • Medical professionals and volunteers.
Please note that for personal fundraising campaigns, funds raised will only be transferred directly to the beneficiaries stated in the page after their KYC and bank account verification.
Apart from the healthcare crisis, the economic impact/damage due to COVID19 pandemic is similar (if not more) to ones usually seen during natural disasters.  Many of our donors have reached out to us for verified, credible avenues to express their support for citizen-led fundraising initiatives.

In-line with our stated policy re: fundraising during calamities, THERE WILL BE NO FEES charged by Milaap.
There are 3 ways to participate
  1. Make a donation to any of the campaigns listed above. Anyone around the world can make a donation.
  1. Start your own fundraiser for someone who’s been affected by the crisis. It could be an individual (eg your household help, an office colleague) or a neighborhood initiative (eg local restaurant, school meals program).  Rally your friends, neighbors and colleagues to contribute. Fundraising is free - there are NO charges on donations received.
  1. Get inspired and do it in your circle (family/neighbors) supporting a vulnerable family directly :)
INR donations made by Indian tax payers can avail tax benefit if you contribute to a campaign towards an NGO which has 80G certificate. Look out for the Tax Benefits tag on the campaign page. Reciepts are usually issued once the campaign ends.
For all Covid-19 related campaigns, Milaap charges NO fees. By default your dashboard will show an amount as Milaap fees (equivalent to 5% of funds raised). However, we will transfer this amount to the account after your campaign ends (i.e after the last transfer), for easy tracking and accounting purposes.
If the campaign is for an individual, we’ll transfer it directly to the individual’s bank accountIf the campaign is being run by a NGO for a local initiative, we’ll transfer it to the NGO’s bank account.
For NGOs, only those with FCRA certificate will be allowed to raise contributions from abroad.
We plan to launch this on March 22nd and expect it to continue this as long as the situation persists (hopefully not too long!)
