I Fought In The Kargil War, But The Toughest Battle Of Life Has Been By My Son’s Hospital Bed

"A soldier never backs down from a battle, but today, I stand on the toughest battlefield of my life—fighting to save my son."

I am Colonel Ashok Kumar Singh (Retd.), a second-generation defence officer. I served the Indian Army for 37 years, leading troops through the Kargil War and Op Parakram, and also contributing to a UN peacekeeping mission. Service runs deep in our family—my father was a World War II veteran.

My four sisters married Army officers—one of them was widowed when her husband died in service. My wife, too, has served the army community, teaching in Army Pre-Primary Schools for over 20 years.

Yet today, after a lifetime of service and sacrifice, I find myself helpless—fighting not an enemy but time itself—to save my son, Arjit Singh, from Leukemia.

At 32, My Son Has Fought Cancer For 7 Long Years

Despite being diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia, he never gave up. A brilliant BTech, MTech, and MBA graduate, Arjit also played squash at the university level. In 2021, I became his bone marrow donor for a transplant. But earlier this year, just after completing his MBA, we received the devastating news—he now has Secondary Acute Myeloid Leukemia. He recently underwent a second bone marrow transplant.

A Father’s Plea – We Need Your Help

However, his recovery has been extremely challenging. Arjit is still hospitalised and is expected to remain there for a few more weeks until he stabilises. He is facing serious post-transplant complications, including fluid in his lungs and a kidney infection, which the doctors are treating carefully. These issues were anticipated, but since this is his second transplant, his condition is critical. We are sincerely hoping he recovers.

Since 2017, we have spent everything we had—our savings, pension, and even taken a loan against our house—to fight for Arjit’s life. Today, we live in a rented flat and continue to struggle with mounting medical bills. Insurance doesn't cover his pre-existing condition, and ongoing care remains very expensive. Your generosity has helped us come this far, and we may need your support again to get through this difficult phase.

I have fought many battles for my country, but this is one I cannot win without you.

I have fought many battles for this country, but nothing compares to this fight for my son. With your help, Arjit has come this far. Now, we’re counting on your continued kindness to help him through the most critical stage yet.

Your kindness can give my son a second chance at life.
